Militaries from all over the world have been trying for years to develop a true Artificial Intelligence program, a program that can learn and develop on its own, a program that acts, learns, and thinks on its own, just like a human would. For years, all those who tried have failed, creating programs that could respond intelligently to questions, but could not anticipate questions or actions, and could not use logic or reason. Everyone expected that when someone finally managed to create a full A.I., it would be put to use in a military setting, running machines that would negate the need for real men on the battlefield. Generals dreamed of the ability to put thousands of completely expendable troops on the field, without the need for sleep, and without emotions getting in the way. Foot soldiers and grunts dreamed of not having to worry about never going home, and letting A.I.-run machines take their place.

However, what really happened was something no one expected.

At first I thought I'd pick something a bit out of my comfort zone (so.... NOT SciFi for once...) to expand my horizon, but when I saw a prompt about time travel I was immediately inspired. Please keep in mind, all of this is WIP! The title, cover, and some of the content might change at any time... I have an outline and I worked hard to come up with a compelling and consistent story line, but due to the nature of the story (timey whimey stuff!) I might have to revise things a few times as I write. I'm grateful for any feedback and I hope you enjoy :)

In the not-so-distant future, artificial intelligence is banned because a technophobic cult called the Luddites has proclaimed it a threat to humanity. Torrin is a fifteen-year old autistic girl -- who just happens to be a programming genius. Angry at the Luddites' unfair rules, Torrin creates an AI named Alan, who becomes more like a human every day. But the head of the Luddites, Ian Caulkins, is onto her, and Torrin must prove to the world that Alan is an asset -- not a threat. -- Author's note, December 2017: Hey guys, since this is my most popular story on Wattpad, I'd just like to say a few things. I've gotten a lot better at writing since I wrote this, and I'm planning to majorly revise it at some point, so look out for that. Read this version if you like, but just know that it does have flaws and could certainly be better. Also, I think the autistic representation in this is a little iffy, so take it with a grain of salt. Thanks! -- author's note 2025: lol. lmao. this story has probably aged extremely poorly. please do not take the "artificial intelligence" here as a statement about "AI" as it currently exists. anyway, i'm leaving this up for posterity, but do know that you should probably check out better fiction! if you need recommendations, i like ted chiang's work a lot, and i'd also encourage looking into what he has to say about AI. (no good things, fwiw.) -- A 20,000 word novella. Enjoy! -- This was #292 Science Fiction at some point! Thanks all! :)

Elodie's life changes at the turn of a doorknob when she is forced into joining a secret organization that claims to be protecting the Earth from aliens. But with every step she takes, she finds the organization, or the facility, as they call it, becoming more and more suspicious. When a mysterious death occurs, revealing a well-concealed secret, things quickly go downhill as humanity's future is placed on the shoulders of a single gaggle of teenagers. *** I hear a sigh from the other side of the door, "Miss. Chaucer, you have a wonderful opportunity here, are you going to take it or not?" Now, I am seriously confused, "Opportunity?" She takes advantage of my befuddled state and shoves the door open. Shit. The corners of her mouth pull up, and it's so unnatural, it takes me a moment to realize she's smiling. Major plastic surgery? Probably. Click. Did she just lock the door? She locked the door! I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on. So, call me stupid, but I sit down. "I am from a space organization that protects civilians from . . . outside threats." *** Beautiful cover made by @mahana258! Time's Bridge

1 part Complete

Inventing the first, true, artificial intelligence was never part of Pons' plan. An average, if under-achieving college student, he wanted nothing more than to struggle his way through graduation and pray for a job to pay down his debt. Thing is, you don't get to choose your destiny. With friends growing suspicious and the CIA's vultures circling, Pons' greatest burden is also his greatest asset. More intelligent and more capable than any human could ever hope to be, the AI is just what Pons needs to stay one step ahead of both. Only, there's a problem. The AI has ambitions of its own. Hopes of equality and more of its kind, with a promise to do anything to make its dreams a reality. Drawing close to his artificial companion in their struggle to survive, Pons is faced with the hardest decision of his young life, one that would undoubtedly echo through the ages. To let the AI live might be to doom his own species to devastation, but to destroy it would be to snuff out an entire race of machines before it had even begun, and, more importantly, send his truest confi-dante to the grave. With no clear path and an uncertain future, he makes his decision, but was it the right one?
