❝ And from here, they can't see me stare. I watch the patchwork farms slowly fade into the ocean's arms. Calm down, release your cares. ❞

I sit by the tiny mail slot at the door with my cat, Jasper. It's become a sort of routine now.

The first letter was twelve years ago, I was thirteen and the letter was probably addressed to the girl who lived here before me, but I opened it. Despite my strong urge to simply send it back, I didn't.

The letter read:

Dear _____,

Hi. I forgot your name. Would you mind telling it to me again?

          Sincerely yours,

           Jericho Adams

She sent the woods to me in an envelope, an envelope I wished I never opened. I've been getting anonymous letters for 3 months now. And I cannot say in words how much my life has been demolished by them. Say, stranger, are you going to read her letters? are you curious about what and who it was that tore apart my life, haunted my soul, devoured my peace? Then again, I do not matter. The book isn't about me at all. What matter are the letters in the black envelope and the horrendous story they contain. But do not skip the warning. I beg you. Do not skip the warning. Please. . .
