28 year old Joanna has been in a bad state all her life. On and off the streets of New York missing out on half the education she had needed. Becoming settled and happy takes effort and if it's really what Joanna wants she needs to fight for it no matter what Still happiness doesn't seem like an option. Living on the streets isn't exactly what you would call a life. Joanna often describes herself as not dead but not living. Joanna motivated herself into a very successful lawyer but still feels like her 13 year old self laying in the gutter of McDonald's. But when she meets a confident and adventurous spirted gentleman, Charlie, her whole life changes. Charlie demonstrates what life is all about like no demonstration ever before.

When Charlie gets away from his drug dealing father and is sent to live with his grandparents, things aren't suddenly okay. Charlie's broken. He's not sure he ever wasn't broken. When things get unbearable, the only thing that helps Charlie feel grounded is music. What can he do when he runs out of batteries for his old walkman? At school crowds of people gather to watch Travis perform, but when he goes home his only company is his cat. He escaped his abusive parents, but now he lives with his older brother who is usually away working. Will the strange, quiet boy he finds sitting on his porch trying to listen in on his music put an end to his loneliness?
