The Greed of Konoha became the most important patron of Akatsuki due to consistently being the highest source of their funding.

Greed would hire them to take down Konoha missing nins.
Greed would hire them to kill those responsible for HER family’s death, use them to spy on other hidden villages while disguising them among traders in her warmly-received caravans that came and went at intervals, and eliminate individuals (and their families) who posed a hostile threat to her growing business empire.
