For as long as Cecilia can remember, she has the Society to thank for still being alive. The Society, a secretive group of people devoted to bringing down the corrupt monarchy, took her into their ranks. Now at the ripe age of twenty-two she is the second in command of the Society, next to her beloved Zane whose sole focus seems to be running the Society rather than returning Cecilia's affections. 

Their worst fears become a dark reality when the King's Legion stumbles upon their headquarters. While her comrades are being captured and taken to the dungeons for execution, Cecilia herself is handled with care from the King's Legion Head of Guard, Lucian Belmonte. He reveals to her that she is actually Eilidh Blythe and heir of the second highest family in the kingdom of Harmonia, a family that had been exiled during the old king's reign of tyranny. It is said that if the prince, Giles Mercer, were to parish that she would be next in line for the monarchy. The now-Eilidh is whisked into an unknown world of extravagant parties and exquisite gowns as she grows accustomed to the forgotten life that she had once lived.

As antagonistic forces loom in the distance, and Catherine's protest gets closer and closer to becoming an event, Catherine has to confront everything that she's come to know and believe so far. She has to confront both the past actions and past emotions that she's been putting off dealing with for the past few months. She has to figure out a way to work with the Prince, who she'd rather not see ever again, and deal with the revelations regarding him.
