"Life is like a song."

"Jacob, please don't. Didn't you just fail the poetry unit?"

"Life can get so loud and stressful at times, but then it can be quiet and calm the next moment."

"I swear you've gotta be quoting someone."

"And like a song, life can have sudden pauses, where no music is playing and everything freezes, as though time itself has stopped. Of course, eventually the song will start up again and everything will resume as it was. Then before you know it, the song is over. No more pauses. No more noise. Just silence."

♫♪♫♪

Everything about Hannah Cloutier's life is broken.

One brother doesn't want to be recognized; the other is hardly recognizable. One parent has suddenly slipped away; the other's sanity slowly slips away. One friend from the past remains loyal; the other is as disloyal as they come.

Starting Grade 12, Anna does her best to exceed in school. Not being exceptionally athletic, she tutors fellow students in her free time, when not hanging out with one of her two best friends: Claire and Dominic. She and Nick have been best friends for eight years, and to say they've been through a lot together would be an understatement.

Two and a half years ago, Anna went through the hardest "Pause" of her life. Now she seeks nothing but to live ordinarily, like nothing ever happened. However, the arrhythmic beat of her past refuses to stay where it belongs.

On top of her past problems and friendship dilemmas, a new stereotypical delinquent, who just so happens to need a tutor, arrives at Anna's school. Meanwhile, an unknown danger lurks in the shadows, ready to wreak havoc.

I gulped. "no, I just forgot. Besides I'm not the only one" I stated matter-of-factly. He grinned "I know, but I wanted to keep you behind. Want to know why?" he asked. I slowly nodded my head in a 'yes'. I felt him smirk against my lips. He pulled away slightly making my lips itch to touch his again. "Because you drive me crazy, I can't stop thinking about you" he murmured whilst placing tiny pecks from my cheek to my jawline. Each kiss leaving a tingly and hot sensation behind... It was gentle and soft, something I never expected from a guy like him. He moved his right hand from my cheek to my waist, tugging me against him, and molded our bodies together. A wave of electricity went down to my core when he licked my lips. "Open your mouth, Bella." His commanding husky voice against my lips jolted my heart, and I followed his order like a slave. With no control, a moan erupted from my throat as his tongue met mine. It was barely audible, but I knew he heard it when he smiled against my lips. He swept my hair from my face to my back and gathered them in his fist. He tugged my head back, deepening the kiss, and my heart thrashed in my chest. At that moment, I didn't need drugs to know what being high felt like because his lips were enough to send me on nine clouds. Just once and I was addicted to it. "You're telling me to calm down after a man just tried to kill us in the middle of the night and is now laying right over there dead!" I said pointing to his limp, none moving body. "He's fine," River said as if it were no big deal. "I didn't hit him that hard." I looked at him in pure shock. What was wrong with him? "Now come on," he said grabbing my arm and leading me away from the man. I looked at him. Sweat had formed all over his forehead and a look of urgency was written all over his face. Blood was now leaking from the nasty cut on his forehead and looked like it would need some serious tending. I looked between him and the guy laying on the ground. I'm probably going to regret this later. I thought to myself as I took a deep breath before nodding and without a second thought, he continued pulling me away. *** Cat was your average girl; she maintained good grades, loved friends, and wanted to become a famous dancer, but her life changes when she literally runs into the biggest bad boy in her school: River Parker.
