Trailer: Zarah was running, and she was running fast. Across the fields and through the corn patches she raced, trying hard not to step on this years vegetables but also keeping a good twelve paces in front of her pursuer. She was being chased by the neighbors dog, a huge hound that often escaped the worn out rope that held it captive in front of cruel old Mr. Kerlards shack. It was a mean old thing, with big slobbery jowls and sharp menacing teeth. Some joked that it had been born with rabies and someone should kill it. Zarah liked animals but this one frightened her more than anything, so she kept on running. Jumping the low fence that surrounded her father's fields she dashed into the dirt road and was suddenly hit by a large chestnut horse. Falling flat on her back she froze, afraid the animal would run her over but it didn't, just stopped. She gazed up, forgetting the dog and shading her eyes with one hand as she looked for a rider. Haloed by the glaring light a boys face peeked over the side, and he smiled apologetically at her, then dismounted, holding out a hand for Zarah to take. Gingerly she grabbed it, the boy hauling her back onto her feet.

As long as the barrier held, the world was allowed to forget about the shadowbeasts of legend. Until now. Gale, a young mage-in-training aching to prove herself, is sent on a simple job to handle the purported animal attacks the desert people seem unable to fend off any longer. Believing the tales of shadowbeasts to be superstitious fancy, she expects to encounter nothing more than mirages and whispers on the wind. What she finds is hatred given form and vengeance given flesh, waiting for the moment to strike. The barrier is weakened, wavering, and an ancient enemy is gathering its strength to break free of its eternal prison. Gale must find a way to restore the barrier, or else die in a war millennia in the making.
