We've been around, for a very long time. We've watched innumerable scores of creatures die, watched empires crumble, great rulers wither away , and planets themselves collapse into barren wastelands devoid of life.

But we've also seen races, brought back from the brink of extinction, kingdoms saved during their final hour, planets and entire star systems blossoming with life and prosperity, all because of our actions.

Yet even so, too often have we been too late to save a planet, or a species, that we sometimes feel very small, very insignificant, when we think of the grandiose ideas many have of gods and their all encompassing power over the universe. Some have even gone so far as to call us a god, despite our failures, but we know better than to believe them.

We are just as mortal as any other.

But they persist in their beliefs, despite what we have told them, what we have shown them to be the truth. So for the time being, perhaps we are a god, at least in their eyes.

They even gave us a name ; Providence.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Join the ragged band of twelve survivors following the events of Risk of Rain as they face off against the game's enigmatic final boss - Providence.

In the beginning, there was death. The darkness flows from hues of purple and orange, the moon rising to kiss the sun's rays one last time as the darkest cloud of night I've ever seen falls over our tiny haven. I catch Will's face from the side of my vision and my heart tightens slightly. The tick of his jaw wouldn't be noticeable for anyone but me. His best friend, his lifeline. A solemn tear forms in my eye as he wipes his face, another tear falling for the family he lost. I love him. Utterly and desperately so, but, there's nothing I can do about that. The ultimate forbidden fruit, if you will. I reach to comfort him and he doesn't respond. I open my mouth to speak and he looks my way, but the gleam in his dark brown eyes hits the moonlight just right and I fall. My voice escapes my throat and I can't do it. I've tried for years to tell him. 10 years, actually. All this time, I hopelessly remained devoted to a ghost who had given the best of himself to a fiery red-head with a sassy personality and the body of a supermodel. For 10 years, I held to the desperate thought that maybe, just maybe, he'd be someone I could count on. Instead, I watched him marry my best friend, smiled as they welcomed their son. Stood, holding that beautiful boy as his mother was in the first round of executions after the beginning of the Revelation. Helped heal Will's wounds in the aftermath. Cried, clutching the tear-stained shirt of my best friend as his son took his last staggering breath in that first harsh winter. The guilt of my emotions crawl through me. My heart twisting in regret, guilt, desperation, and grief. I loved my best friend. She was so much more than that; she was my family. In this dystopian quick read, join a group of people desperate to recapture their freedom and end a tyrant's reign.

Without warning it began! The inevitable, I think it's fair to assume this book is not in my possession. This means I'm most likely dead. Most nights I wrestle the reason I have chosen to explain what happened, the things we did to each other, things no human being should witness. I Wright this simply to enlighten your poor soul and give you more of a chance than I had. A chance to survive what is most likely the brink of human extinction. Times are harder now and as the days go by we are less of our former selves. We have become husks floating around in a lost, desolate world. I look at this place and it still seems so alien to me, as the days roll into the nights I'm still unsure of how we got to this point. If you are reading this, you too are probably North and very much aware of what has happened to our beloved city. I feel a responsibility to inform you that you will most likely share the same fate as I have. I understand you may be wondering what's worse than death, trust me in this place death seems like a paradise compared. I do not know why I still feel so obligated to write this. To be honest most nights I think its just an escape from the madness, like a natural sedative it's the only way I can fall asleep in this hell. However I do need to clear my conscious and pay dividend for my demons. I need you to know what happened to me; I need you to know what we have become and what we are capable of. I need you to know why we have chosen to kill each other, why the smell of human flesh lingers in the air like slow roast pork on a Sunday afternoon. Why bodies litter our streets. Why things that seemed to be so impossible happen in front of our very own eyes. Why conformity i this place is the unreal ideas people live their lives by and why I was included into this group of youthful abominations. All of this might be irrelevant compared to what I am about to tell you.

Everything changed when they came out of hiding, terror spread across the world as people began to question if our presidents and our global leaders lied to us and weren't from the same race. The Beasts blended in amongst us as if we were the same, except humans didn't have the same predatory instincts and we couldn't change our forms like they could. Soon after we learnt that we weren't the only species people began going missing. Some were unlucky and taken as something that the Beasts called a Mate that one word made fear spread throughout my veins, I would rather sell my soul than have one of them mutts chain me to them. Six months went by before the government, that was un-tainted by this vile race began to take action into their own hands contacting other countries and militaries causing the great war to happen, sending both my parents off to fight for our rights. Only one of them came back, two months was the longest we lasted before we were overpowered by them. Six years of living in this dysfunctional environment and my hatred had never dwindled. Some people still believed in god and had faith in him, I didn't know what I believed in but I prayed like everyone else that I would get through another day without hearing the soul crushing word 'Mate'. Escaping My Shadows by dwatkins77

The novel started as a short story that was submitted to a writing contest (didn't win). It is very loosely based upon the Babylon 5 Universe (telepaths, shadows, plethora of different races, etc.). I still continued to think about the story and how it ended without a final resolution (though the story did have an ending, it left a lot of questions about the protagonist). Thanks to the obsession and compulsion I have with writing (it's a blessing and a curse) I decided to continue the story to final resolution. This is it. A race called the Chitoxan came from an unknown area of space and declared war on the races making up the Earth-Alliance. More technically advanced than the races they encounter, the overwhelming power of the shadow vessels results in most battles ending in complete defeat for the Earth-Alliance. Only by massing fire on an individual shadow vessel or, in extremely desperate situations, committing suicide with a ship's reactor overload, can a shadow vessel be defeated. Earth and Earth-alliance colonies are slowly being conquered and occupied by Chitoxa. The humans on these occupied colonies are enslaved and forced to serve the Chitoxan's every need. A young man volunteers for the Space Marines during the Chitoxan war. Upon induction, he discovers that he is 'blessed' with unique abilities. However, these abilities cause his life to be changed drastically and terribly. He is taken away and forced into a never-ending nightmare. After a quick and violent encounter between Earth and Chitoxa, another Earth fleet is beaten and is almost wiped out. The surviving ship gets a lucky shot at an attacking shadow vessel, slicing off one of its appendages. The pain and shock of the loss does something to the human controller of the battle crab....
Humanity Endures by Evan_Armstrong

Desperation, ideals, greed, and hope - they all have a role to play in tearing the galaxy apart. The human race finds itself at the precipice; a mysterious, monstrous force threatens everything in the cosmos, and all the while, the unity of humanity's Empire threatens to shatter just when it is needed most. Never before has extinction been so tangible a possibility, and never before has exceptional courage, intellect, and luck been more needed. This is a story about more than just people, their ambitions, and their conflicts: it is a story about crisis, set in a universe where survival, for any side, and for anyone, may be impossible. It remains to be seen if the popular patriotic saying, "Humanity endures," will remain true - even for a week. -- If you wish you purchase a paperback version of this novel, you can do so on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Humanity-Endures-Evan-Peter-Armstrong/dp/B08P8QK86H. 100 years ago, amidst WW3's nuclear bombing, a deadly virus was released in the atmosphere and nearly wiping out the humanity. It lives inside the human brain thriving on the empathy receptors, leading to irrational behaviour and ultimately brain death. To slow the damage, scientists created L.O.V.E, short for Living Off Vital Emotions, a nanovaccine that numbs the virus and switches off all strong emotions. As a last resort and with a dying planet, the Supreme Government created the City, a place to contain the infected survivors suitable for the experiment. Those in the first stages of illness became ideal candidates to receive the neuroinhibitor. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high. With a new generation of nanoids, stronger and smarter to fight the battle, the virus doesn't have a chance. Many attempts were made to create a man-made version of synthetic dopamine and each time the outcome was a disaster. Their goal is to create new generations, immune to the virus. These are called Purebloods, the offsprings of those who find pure love, the only cure to save them from a violent death. Running out of time, the Experiment entered in its final stages. To minimize the threats, the Colonies have sent their best soldiers to oversee the trial and protect its key subjects. If only things were going according to plan, or better...stay hidden. With Iron Guard, the resistance outside the walls, hunting the Purebloods too, will the trial save human race before it's too late? #3 in #dystopianfuture (27.06.2020)
