Avunaye had lived the same life for seven years in the insane asylum. Same roommates, same food, same building. Nothing has changed since she arrived. Not a single thing.

And then something does.

When Simon Rodgers becomes her new roommate, Avunaye is at the least surprised. The boy had been found insane after laughing at and torturing an unknown man out on the streets, and was sentenced to the insane asylum.

Avunaye takes pity on the boy, who refuses to believe that he will be stuck in the asylum forever. Her other roommates though, do not. Crona, who treats Avunaye as her master, does not trust the newcomer for he has "black blood." And Taylor, a very murderous child, tries to kill him in his sleep. But Avunaye is the leader, and she can stop them, which is exactly how she earns Simon's trust.
