Manzanita is a small town on the coast of Oregon. It's quiet and peaceful demeanor is exactly why Evan's mother used to bring him there when he was young and they lived in sunny and hectic California. 7 years after her death, Evan packs up his belongings and heads for Manzanita with his feisty Colombian childhood friend, Rosario.
Living in Manzanita is Charlotte Marie Hewson (you can call her Charlie), Chris Hewson, and their father Charles Hewson. Chris is the typical star quarterback of the town. He's wildly sought after but an all around jerk, despite his actual sweet manner that he keeps hidden from everyone except Charlie. Charlie is the town's sweetheart and is the only one who's ever been able to get close to Chris.
As Evan and Rosario move and get comfortable in the town of Manzanita, a murder rocks the small town and its inhabitants. Soon, however, Evan starts seeing the boy from the news. Not well and alive, but as a ghost. Evan begins a journey of trying to help Chris right his wrongs and find out who murdered him.
In Between the Trees, the story explores death, relationships and the power of redemption. As Evan struggles to get people to listen to him on his sightings, he grows closer to Charlie and the truth over who murdered Chris Hewson. But will Evan going through it all to help them open the door for the skeletons in all their closets?
