'Two battle-scarred hearts with one chance for happiness.' English nurse, Fleur Armitage, wants to escape all reminders of the Great War, which killed family and friends, by living as far from its reminders as possible, so travels to outback Australia. Jack Edgarson is a pastoralist, war hero and damaged man. He lives in isolation, fearful he may harm someone. Through a chance meeting, their lives become entangled and they come to share a love of the wide western plains, but dare they love each other?

Battling shellshock and pain, he turns to his caretaker, Marion O'Leary, for comfort. Alone and changed after his experiences in the trenches, he seeks a friend in Marion.
