That is exactly what happened to Scarlette, in order for her to stay alive she has to bury her true self and hide her true emotions behind a cool mask of indifference. She uses humour and charm as armour to ensure her plans will work.
She has to constantly look over her shoulder scared she is caught and is constantly forced to move around for her safety, she prevents herself from forming connects because saying goodbye is too hard and explanations aren't allowed.
Then came Lucas, the jaw dropping bad boy who refuses to believe Scarlette's indifference. With his cool cold calculating icy blue eyes he seems to pierce her façade and see more than he is supposed to.

In life there are a few things that are certain, the sun will rise the next morning, my parents love me, I am no ordinary girl no matter what I wish, and running is invertible...
