How to Fall into the Pit (A Short Story)

Derek is an assassin for hire currently under the government's control, and only because they have leverage against him: they know who-and where-his sister is. To keep her safe and out of the Pits Derek kills American citizens who are causing too much bother or unrest. But when he decides to take some time off to spend with his sister, the government turns on him, suspecting defection and treason.

Some back story on this piece: I wrote this a year ago for my English class, as an assignment called 'vocabulary composition'. The teacher supplies ten vocabulary words and we are given free rein to write whatever we choose, so long as the words are used correctly. I chose to write an origin story of sorts of my character Derek Vanne, whom I first created on a writing role play website that goes by the name Chicken Smoothie.
