Jack "Rusty" McGee's most prized possession is his dad's old guitar, which was the best gift the mighty timber man gave his son.

Everyone in the small town of Swifts Creek, where the mountain ash grow tall, knows Rusty and his talents - he sings everywhere; in the pub, around the campfire while working his family's timber business, at footy club functions and at the local show every year.

While Rusty doesn't imagine he'll ever make the big time, he has always had one dream, which his dad has always encouraged - to take his guitar and busk at the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

When his father dies in tragic circumstances, Rusty doesn't think he can go ahead with the trip to that year's festival; how can he when his mum needs help to run the business?

But when his mum encourages him to do it, giving him the keys to his dad's beautiful old Sandman to get there, not only does he fulfill the dream, he gets an unexpected result too.

Rusty's journey takes great turns; but when tragedy strikes back home, the boy from the mountains must make a choice - give up his dream and stay home or keep going.
