A memoir that follows the life of a new family in war-torn Vietnam escaping by boat not knowing where they would end up. A very pregnant Lan and her husband, Thanh, float aimlessly in their family's broken down fishing boat until a big Hong Kong cargo ship pick them up. They eventually make their way to Hong Kong and save up enough money doing odd jobs until they land in the United States. A week after landing, Lan finally gives birth to their daughter, Thuy Duong, the first to be anointed Vietnamese American in her generation. This is a story of grit, perseverance, love, betrayal, and forgiveness.
