"Pirates are just an old children's story." I shrug, "You cannot be a pirate. Pirates aren't real."
The stranger laughs, "Where are you from?"
"A little village way up North, Mother was very protective after my Father passed on." I lie smoothly.
"Why do want to join my crew?"
I can't very well tell him I'm on a mission for my King and he ordered me to join a ship's crew sailing towards the tropics.
"To escape my matchmaking Mother." I reply.

Edward Villiers, known to his crew as Captain Ed and to his enemies as Blue Bilius Capain of the Grey Ghost, is a pirate captain. He must have been deep in his cups because the new sailor he just hired on is actually a woman. How is he supposed to explain this one to his crew? And more importantly, what is the blasted female doing seeking passage on a Pirate ship anyhow? And why doesn't she believe in pirates?

For Arethusa Medusa this voyage is a mission, one that she was chosen for by her King. She doesn't consider herself to be anyone special; just a rather ordinary second daughter of a Lord, she did well in all her studies aside from dancing (her mother insisted). Of course, Arethusa doesn't really believe the ship is she on is an actual pirate ship, her mother always told her Pirates were just a scary story told to little children who misbehaved, it's not like she's ever even see the sea before, how was she to know that Pirates are real?

I said it in a whisper, and my tears began to fall. I hid in the wardrobe like instructed. There was lots of screaming and yelling. My body uncontrollably shook from fear. The door was opened to our house. The small creak echos through the room. I trembled in fear as I peaked through the small gap. I covered my mouth to stop my scream from coming out. The pirates were walking around, opening drawers and cabinets, and tossing beds. One man approached the wardrobe. I close my eyes and bend down, holding my body as I hug my knees. The wardrobe was opened. I can't help the tears that are leaving my eyes. I still haven't made any eye contact with them yet. Fear is running rampant. "Look what we have here, boys." He says. I watch his feet as he drifts his body away from me to give the three other men a look at me. (1) "A boy" chuckled in amusement. (2) "Perhaps our newest young swabbie." One of them laughed in response. (3) "Young spring, rise up so we can see your face." One of the men said, (2) My body was frozen with fear, and I made no move. "Now young, Swabbie. I woke up in a daze, unsure of why my body felt so stiff, so sore. I winced as I threw my legs over the side of the bed, and again as I stood up, pain flaring from every muscle in my body as I made my way to the polished mirror beside my wardrobe. I gasped at the sight of the bruised and battered girl in front of me. The memories from last night flooded my mind. It was my birthday. Father had invited several high class guests to the event. He expected me to begin courting. The man he had introduced me to was a plump old man. I had refused adamantly, his years against my fourteen churned my stomach. Unfortunately, my father didn't take my refusal well. He grabbed me by the arm roughly and dragged me into the attic-my bedroom. His beatings were getting worse. At least the last time i t hadn't taken much effort to hide the pain. This time that wouldn't be possible. This time, there would be no hiding it. This time the pain was too much. I whimpered as I headed to the door, but it was locked. It seems my father had predicted my state. Rage and anger burned through my veins as I slammed my fist against the door. One day I would learn to defend myself. One day I would escape this wretched castle. One day I would no longer be bound by the Caspian people. One day I will no longer be their princess. "I will get away from here, and you will pay for what you've done old man." I vowed before slamming my fist against the door again. "I will be free." I huffed as I crawled back into the bed for some much needed rest.

"How dare you bring me aboard this ship without so much as telling me what you are?" She yelled. Kincade let out a smug grin, one that infuriated Astryd even more. She took a few more steps toward him so that they were mere feet apart. He looked down at a doubloon he was holding and slowly turned it over in his hands as he spoke. "I saw a troubled woman in a sailor's pub, obviously hiding from the royal guards. Surely you must have gotten yourself into a sticky situation. And you don't expect me to assume what you are?" Astryd fumbled for words. What was he getting at? He lifted his head to look her in the eyes. "You're a thief and now a sailor. You know what that makes you, sweetheart?" "I am not a..." she shouted, but she stumbled at the last word. She pointed her finger in Kincade's face and whispered, "pirate." -------------------------------------------- I would like to acknowledge Thompson Editing Services, who is responsible for being my editor and proofreader for this book as well as an amazing writing mentor.
