I guess I have it pretty bad off- living as a greaser means that there's a lot that can go wrong. I live with my two brothers. They are very important to me. Ya see, my parents died in an auto-wreck. It left me and my little brother, Ponyboy, in custody of my older brother, Darry. All we got left is each other and the gang. About a year ago, Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston died. They were important to the gang, my brothers, and I. Sometimes I wonder what would've happened if Darry didn't hit Pony.
Maybe we go through more stuff than the socs, the rich kids with all the money and fancy parties and stuff that us greasers can just dream about, because we gotta be as strong as we are.

Among the many gangs in Tulsa, the biggest one happens to be an Italian force. Their name is the Key Men, despite both men and women being in the gang. It is dangerous for Elle to not be in the Key Men because she does speak fluent Italian, and her brother may or may not be able to protect her forever like he promised. The Key Men want Elle Bovino because she has power and could influence the other girls. But many gangs want her for the same reason. Who knows, her life could domino effect downhill due to the one guy who promised her protection. Hell, she might not even marry the man she thought.
