Following the death of a less than ideal father, Annabelle and her fragile younger sister are passed on to their aunt and uncle, The lord and Lady Longford in a fashionable part of London. Due to their tumultuous upbringing, the girls are guarded and it takes them some time to get accustomed to a safe and happy life. Annabelle is still learning to trust her new family as she is thrust into her 1st season as a lady. Suddenly all the trust she had been gaining is shattered when her past comes back to haunt her. Her struggle to maintain her sister's innocence and escape the torments of her childhood threatens to overwhelm her until a shining beacon of hope presents itself... Will it be able to save her?

Although she shared the same brunette locks as her sister Ada and the same blue eyes as her brother Tommy, she did not share the same attitudes. Francesca was an anxious girl.
