Penny Johnson, newly licensed lawyer, thinks her first client is slightly balmy when she announces, "My house is haunted." However, it turns out Althea Riversmith is right-her house is haunted-but not in the usual way of the supernatural. Penny is faced with ghosts from Althea's past, which must be resolved before Althea can sell her home and retire to Florida. Althea is charged with a crime, a trial ensues, and Penny finds herself at odds with some or the citizens of the village of Midvale Corners.

In the fall of 2015, a strange woman stopped me outside my law firm, claiming a case I was handling had a hidden story. The case was open-and-shut. A first-degree murder conviction, a death sentence. The direct appeals were exhausted, and we were in the final review stage. It was, for all intents and purposes, over. Yet, she appeared now, at the eleventh hour. "Are you a witness?" I asked, walking. Her reply was something I will never forget. "No," she said. "I'm the exhibit." Author's Note: I post a new chapter almost every single day!
