In this thrilling short story by Katherine Anne, a young man is forced to atone for the murder of his mother. He's been rotting in a London prison for the past five years. Now that he's come of age, it's time for him to pay up. It's a life for a life, but can this daring teen escape execution with the knowledge of what really happened on the night of his mother's death? Or will he die like the killer he claims he's not?

This book had previously been available at all eBook retailers, but I decided to take it down and offer it here on WattPad and on my Books Amino page. This story will be republished if I so choose and if it gains the favour of you the readers. Thank you all for your support.

Eleven short stories, posted one story at a time: Two little girls, in two different eras, yearning for their parents. A shy girl in a new country. An uncertain woman dancing back into life after the death of a spouse. A thrilling short short. Mother and son argue over what is dignity, what value her life. A creepy little short that won an honourable mention in the Hart House Short Story Contest. The bureaucrat and his ever-so-busy day. A party that glitters and excludes ones who don't fit. A daughter rebels. A mother and her youngest, a conflict without end, that only death can solve? Murder stalks the homeless in Toronto's innocent streets. I hope you enjoy these stories! The ePub and Kindle versions include a bonus romance, written in 1919 by my grandmother, about two people who have to face danger to find each other. There's a story in that: My mother’s sister and mother liked to write poetry. My mother’s mother was a stellar speller and a killer Scrabble player. But I had no idea until recently that as an adolescent she had written and submitted stories for publication. I don’t think her queries were successful. And it wasn’t long before she got married and started riding the Wall of Death as a living with her husband. And so in honour of that century-ago effort of hers, I reproduced in the ePub, as she typed it errors and all (or what I suppose to be errors as grammar is different between countries and eras), the story my mother – her daughter – found recently in an old envelope postmarked from London 6:15 pm 23 SP 19 (23 September 1919) to Miss D. Persephone can't understand why everyone expects her to be upset at the sudden and mysterious death of her mother, she had always been brought up accepting death as a natural fact of life. With the threat of Child Protection Services looming, Persephone's father finally tells her what he and her mother had been up to in their little business in the industrial district. He had designed an automated room to euthanise people when they felt they had lived as much as needed, in an attempt to start combating overpopulation at a local level, hoping that someday the idea would not be taboo and he could operate his business openly. When Persephone's father has a breakdown and abandons her the truth comes out for the world to see, and the next few days are a whirlwind for Persephone, who spends a night in hospital, moves in with a grandmother and aunt she never knew she had, is interviewed by police and is finally taken to her father's trial to give evidence, all the while contemplating the moral issues brought up by what her father has done, and whether anyone is truly evil, deciding that if her father was trying to do what he thought was right, he shouldn't be punished. At the trial it is revealed that the automated room her father had been using to kill people was triggered by a signal sent from his home every time Persephone turned the television on, realising that she was responsible for hundreds of deaths Persephone breaks down. The next few weeks see Persephone building a new life for herself with her grandmother and aunt, having grown up considerably since her mother's death, still conflicted over what her father had done, and wondering what she should do next. Into the Gloaming has previously been long listed for the QWC/Allen and Unwin Manuscript Development Award, and the QWC/Hachette Manuscript Development Award.

These are, obviously, short sad stories that will probably get you down. Most of them are connected in some way, shape or form. !¡!¡~ This is old writing, and not as good as I can currently do, but I will not delete it as it is a reminder I can do better. Thank you for understanding. *Warning* ~This story may include mentions of suicide and rape, slight gore, depression, and possible drug use. Read at your own risk.
