Mercy Saunders is a white teenage girl living in the American South during the height of WWII. With no remaining family, sparse education, little money, forbidden friendships and a complicated history, she navigates the delicate social barriers that hold together her small home town of St. Angel.

When an unexpected death sets into motion a complex turn of events, Mercy grasps for all the strength and sense she has left to find hope in an uncertain future and an unwanted opportunity. It is only after drastic changes occur does she discover that this was only the beginning...

In "'44", Mercy recalls her childhood from much later in her life, transporting the reader with great emotional and descriptive detail back to a time when war was prominent, gender lines were strict, and race was everything.

Jessie White stands out from the crowd. As a Southern woman, she defies the typical expectations. While others her age are embarking on new careers, Jessie's upbringing on a ranch alongside four brothers equipped her with skills many would balk at. She's adept at horseback riding, calving, stall cleaning, and more. Fiercely independent, Jessie refuses to rely on any man, a resolve hardened after heartbreak at the hands of Max Lane, a rancher's son, two years prior. Jessie has resolved to take up bull riding, a skill that appears to be a family legacy. Her lifelong dream has been to ride a bull before an audience, but now, her ambition has shifted to rescuing the White Family Ranch after a substantial portion of their funds vanished and debts began accumulating. Max Lane's family is eager to buy the White Family Ranch, but Jessie refuses to let him take away the one thing that sustains her. Being a beauty bartender owner and a female bull rider makes things challenging. Everyone says she can't do it because she's a woman, but Jessie is determined to prove them all wrong. Initially skeptical, Trace Black doesn't recognize her potential until he witnesses her mount a bull for the first time. Although he may appear arrogant externally, that pales in comparison to his internal complexity. Trace and Jessie are initially oblivious to their chemistry, though it's evident to everyone around them. As Jessie gathers the courage to express her feelings to Trace, the things she dreads occur. However, it doesn't make matters worse; it alters everything profoundly. *WARNING* Book contains language, child loss, trauma, etc. Thank you for choosing my story! Allen Cole McGregor was bred to hate. A fourth-generation neo-Nazi with blood on his knuckles and a five-year prison scar on his soul, Cole trusts only his name and the men who share his views-until the night they turn on him. Left to die on a snow-covered road out in the middle of nowhere, breath thinning, he welcomes the cold when it comes... and then opens his eyes to an angel. But.. She isn't what he was taught angels look like. Angel LeeAnna Brooks didn't plan to find a stranger bleeding in her path. She didn't plan to move faster than the fear growing inside of her, while hoping and praying that the man before her had no affiliations with the devil himself. After the swastika tattoos screamed their presence beneath his blood-stained clothes, Angel feared the man might be a demon, and she had no idea how to handle that revelation. Their collision is gasoline and a match: a Black woman hiding from pain and loss, a white man raised in a creed of rot, both trapped on a secluded homestead where winter is closing in and secrets stalk the walls. As enemies circle and old lies unravel, Cole is forced to confront the poison in his bones-and the one person willing to see the boy he buried alive. This is not a safe love story. It's a reckoning. Redemption has a cost, and crossing the line means someone-maybe both of them-won't come back the same. Trigger + Themes: racial tension, betrayal, survival, slow-burn redemption, enemies-to-lovers. ***MATURE 18+*** *AMAZON PUBLISHED BOOKS ARE EDITED TO REFLECT CHANGES NOT AVAILABLE ON WATTPAD* This is a Curvy Community Romance: #DISCLOSURE #CelebrateBlackStories #EyesLipsFierce #wattpadbookshelves ⛔️TRIGGER WARNING: This story is MATURE.
