At R. J. Hendricks High School in the small town of Red Wing, Minnesota, the 10th graders are assigned a pen pal. Aria isn't sure how she feels about this. She actually has to write letters. To someone she doesn't know. Sure, it'd be a chance to make a friend, she doesn't have any, even though she's been at Hendricks for a few weeks now. But what if her new pen pal doesn't like her..?

Dmitri is a simple, good Russian boy. He learns that he is being assigned a pen pal, and they'll be an American. He doesn't like this, but he's a good student, so he will send letters to his pen pal, regardless of who they are, for the required amount of time. Who knows, maybe he'll even like them, as unlikely as this is.
