Resources in Courtile are very limited, and the population of the weak is rapidly increasing. Kylie Mason's father has wanted to be the Board Leader for his whole life, but knew he had gotten too old for anyone to accept him as their leader. As his daughter, Ambrose believes she should be the one to fulfill his dream, but everything changes when she fails the biggest test in Courtile. You receive two Scars, one light one on your cheek, and another on your non-dominant forearm, when you turn fifteen. In a year you return and you either survive when the Inspector sees that your Scars have indeed not faded, or suffer the deathly harsh desert Outside if they have faded. During the Scarring ceremony in the Stadium, something happens to Kylie's newly placed Scars, and she is banished Outside of the Dome. Everyone has a place in Courtile when you pass the test, but those who were banished, have become stronger and survived, they are known as Outsiders.
