Deep beneath the water's surface, are creatures, as old as time itself. Since before the first man walked upon the earth, beings with the upper half of a human, and the lower half of a fish lived beneath the waves, which are ruled by the moon. Since before man spawned from the ocean, mer-creatures have thrived, and lived.
Until that fated day, in which man severed all ties with the Mer community; threatening to murder every last one of them, if they dare come upon land again. The Mer community didn't believe this threat, until one of their own went upon land, gaining legs, wings that symbolized air, and singing her Siren's song. For the Mer creature that came upon land, was that of a dangerous kind, that of the Sirens, who sang to sailors, and all that lived on land, to lure them in with their beauty, and drag them to the depths of the dark sea. The Siren's of the sea are the most dangerous, most cruel, of the Mer that live beneath the water's surface. Of the sea, Siren's had torn, black wings that symbolized the dangers of the Sea and Air, gills, to breathe underwater, and a Mermaids tail, darkened and more lethal than that of the Mermaid, whom were fair and just. Sirens are chosen by the Moon to drag the most unworthy to their death, unlike the Mermaids, who are charged with bringing a single female to the depths of the Sea, every hundred years, to become a Mer. On the day that single Siren had come upon land, those who lived on land came to listen to her Siren song, unknowing of its power to strangle them, just by capturing their hearing.
On that one day, the leader of the human society, who was able to resist the Siren's charm, decapitated the Siren.
Ever since, none have broken the sacred oath taken by both Mer and human, until one is born, of land and water. A Moon's child, that is fated to cause destruction, or unity.
