It's high school, and Dan has always been home schooled. When he gets to his new school as a freshman, he is instantly pushed aside as an outcast. The whole reason he was put into public school was his parents were moving away to live with his grandfather who was sick. So, he was to live with his dad's friend who also had a son his age. Phil was also an outcast, but he got along alright in school. Having to live with Phil and Phil's dad who was gone half the time, Dan and Phil get to know each other quite well.
