After the inevitable destruction of Earth, a few million were selected -- based on their skills and their benefit to society -- and jettisoned off into deep space in search of a suitable place to live...
The ship travels through a wormhole, sending them to an alternate universe, where they stumble upon the planet Sehrin. Life soon commences, and a community is built.
Something peculiar about Sehrin is its sun; it provides warmth and light, but instead of causing skin cancer to appear from overexposure, it instead causes mutations to appear. This caused the community to be separated into two main districts: "The Hills" (where the wealthy class lives), which exists underground to avoid overexposure, and "The Ghetto," where people must struggle to survive unless subjecting themselves to slavery below ground.

The Way It Is
I am not from this planet. Hell, I am technically not from this galaxy. However, that doesn't change the fact I am here now, and my job is to save what I can on this forsaken planet and what's left of its inhabitants. The problem is that not everyone wants to be saved. I know what you're thinking. You can't save those who don't want to be saved. I bloody well agree. The ones who sent me don't care what you or I think, though. All they care about is numbers. They need a certain success rate to continue to get funding for their "expeditions" and "peacekeeping" efforts. I use both terms loosely here.
