In school everyone assumes that Alexa is deaf. Alexa Demoynes speaks using sign language because she's mute, not deaf. Alexa can hear everything anyone says, she just can't respond in a way they understand.
The only one to figure out Alexa's situation is Gavin Ignastias. Gavin chooses not to talk because he is scared of hearing what people will say about him. He's not deaf, he's not mute, he's shy and entirely too self aware.
But how does he figure it out? Why is he the only one who knows? And what does he do with the information he has about Alexa Demoynes?
