In a world like Sword Art Online...dying isn't normal. You don't just respawn and wake up somewhere...you actually die in your real body. A group of people decide to come together to try and not suffer the horrible fate of many people. 

(Though this story is about a group, a lot of the story focuses on the main antagonist Kōkina. And yes, the cover change has a purpose and isn't there to look cool)
