pass it: you live a normal, long life. 
Fail it: your left for dead in the slums. 

Protected from birth, by her parents, Michelle is hidden away in a secret basement. If she wasn't, she would have had her fate sealed by The Test, which her parents, having barely passed it themselves, were sure she would fail.
