A girl with kaleidoscope eyes seems to be a magnet for danger. A boy keeps his distance and helps protect her secretly with magic for years, as a part of his apprenticeship to a Great Wizard who took him in when he was young (and a mixture of personal duty and fascination.) Against his mentor's guidance, over the years he falls in love with her.
