When Ariella's mother died, she goes off to the London Institute, in the hopes of getting far away from Idris and the pain that comes with both of her parents' deaths. She can't stand even the idea of Idris anymore than she has to, because it reminds her too much of her parents and what she used to have with them there. When she goes to London, she begins to travel even more, to places like Italy, Egypt, and India. While she travels, she hears things from a few Downworlder friends about a girl who can create her own runes. Ariella decides to look into the matter herself, using some strange ways. She finds out that the girl who can create her own runes is indeed one of her only living relatives, Clarissa Morgenstern, and that Clarissa lives in New York, alongside her mother and Lucian Graymark, her fiance, and whom Ariella knows to be a Downworlder. Ariella takes the chance and says goodbye to those at the London Institute, going to the NY Institute to see Clary and her friends there. But when she gets there, she isn't exactly welcome with open arms. They don't seem to like and accept her like they did when they first met Clary and maybe that's because of Ariella's strange visions, the ones that seem to tell Ariella everything there is to know about the inhabitants of the NY Institute, and what will be in store for them regarding Clary's half-demon brother Jonathon/Sebastian. But time goes on and Clary and Alec start to trust her. Clary hopes that Ariella is the key to defeating Sebastian once and for all, and Alec hopes that Ariella will give him the confidence to get back together with Magnus, the love of his life, or at least to build that bridge up again, and possibly heal their burned relationship.
