The story of a young horse trader who manages to sample most of the adventure on offer in the West of 1866. The lead character is a truly disruptive hero, prepared in his own way for the challenges of love, violence and his own driven ambition. The first person narrative provides a strong voice in a well researched account of the period. The title describes the arc of the story, a horse and cattle herd driven unwittingly into the Platte River Indian War of 1866. In a harrowing final scene the outcome is truly in doubt. Fast paced writing in a highly readable style.
