Writing fanfiction is another tactic I use to get myself into the mood for writing. It's fun, and is a creative way to appreciate some personal favorites. I've found that, while some people are familiar with the books I'm taking inspiration from, others have never even heard of them--they end up going out to buy the book so they can read the original story themselves!
