Zenith Proctor has always believed her life is in Amity. She loves the sunshine and the laughter and the games. Everything about Amity screams home, but not necessarily safety. From a terrible event that happened in her past, Zenith isn't sure she can stay in Amity anymore. And making a secret friend helps her get past what happened in her past and embrace her future.
When she turns 16 and has to take the Aptitude test, she realizes that she has a choice, and the choice isn't the smartest as she finds out whenever she is met with obstacles that threaten to derail who she is as a person and the comfort of her life as a whole.
As she meets people who are like her and she goes through the motions of being who society expects her to be, Zenith realizes that secrets aren't safe and keeping them is sometimes worse than the truth.
