Film Enigma dengan setting waktu Perang Dunia Ke 2 dan unsur Nazi yang kuat ditampilkan pada awal cerita. Kereta api uap, bangunan-bangunan kuno dan mobil juga mesin sandi memperkuat unsur setting waktu lampau.  Disamping itu, pemeran utama pria dalam film ini berpacu dengan waktu untuk memecahkan kode sandi Nazi. Para ahli sandi di Bletchley Park (Inggris) kesulitan untuk memecahkan kode sandi tersebut. Kode sandi ini digunakan agar pesannya tidak dapat diketahui oleh sekutu.

Selain menyoroti setting waktu dan lokasi film, hal yang paling menonjol adalah ketekunan pemeran utama pria dan kawan-kawannya yang berusaha  keras untuk bisa memecahkan sandi tersebut.
