Maggie swans in and out of my house and my parents' bed like a cat, with a violent shock of red hair and fingertips yellowed from too many cigarettes. My parents told me never to trust anyone, but she is warm and round with cool hands that were made for me. They couldn't be right, not about someone like Maggie. Could they?

A short story I first wrote in 2011 but revisited recently and revised. The dual inspiration was Rod Stewart's song 'Maggie May' about a young man with an older lover and the hysteria surrounding communism during the Cold War. The story takes place on the 6th of August, the date in 1945 that the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, ultimately ending the Second World War but plunging citizens of both East and West into a Cold War that lasted until the 1990s.
This is my very first submission to Wattpad so please be kind but don't hesitate to let me know what you think! I was very proud of this story when I first wrote it but it has evolved in a way that excites me as I get back into writing.

Disclaimer: i wrote this back in high school when i was highly mentally unstable, pulling all nighters, and over exerting myself in all sorts of ways.
