Autumn Moriarty has been dead for three years. She had left destruction in her wake, but not under her name. Her murder had been all over the news, saying James Moriarty killed her, then disappeared to some island in the Pacific, forcing fraudulent Sherlock Holmes to commit suicide by jumping off of St Bartholomew's hospital.
Old friend Autumn Moriarty is mourned by her few friends. Old friend Valentine 'Val' Jarvis is yet to be involved in the adventurous life Sherlock and John lead.
Val is an old friend of Mycroft's and Sherlock's, therefore, oblivious to the consequences, joins Sherlock and John in their cases. The flings in life he threw aside will be back to haunt him.
