There's a monster in the high mountains of Hastone, one that must be slaughtered.
Every year, the ruler of the lands, King Darren, holds a test for the best fighters to compete in. A test where these warriors must battle the monster's children, the dragon beasts. Many of them die fighting, but it's to prove who is eligible to slay the mighty monster.
Ladrel and her neighbor Eadward are just two of the "entrants" competing this year.
They're fighting to survive, not knowing their fate in the locked-up forest. The beasts are out and ready to kill in Darren's Game.

She'd spent many years playing in this forest as a child. While Selene had enjoyed her novels in the warmth of the house, a blanket wrapped around her narrow shoulders, Sidra always came home covered in mud and scrapes from hours out in the wilderness. She'd take an axe out into the forest and pretend to fight off monsters, the terrifying Mystics that her grandmother had told her stories about. Books of all sizes and shapes, no matter the content, because it made her feel close to her sister just as she had before her parents died. She thought of her family now, how she was all alone. First, there was existence. Then, creation. And finally, life.
