When D.S. Edmund Gray first arrived on the doorstep of Coates Hill Preparatory School for Boys, I.D. in one hand and takeaway cup of steaming coffee in the other, his initial reaction was how glad he was not to have gone there.
His companion, a certain D.I. Cynthia Hawes, however, was more concerned about how easy it looked to climb out if the large, ornate Gothic style windows on the upper floors and make your way safely (ish) down to the ground below.
And to D.I. Hawes's intent amusement, not that she would ever admit it to another living soul, it seemed one of the young boys had done just that.

It took us twenty minutes to go around, but before we could leave the park, we got tackled. I tried punching the guy again, but he pinned my hands on each side of my head. He demanded as I stuttered out a quiet yes. I studied him cautiously as he walked towards the far end of the room, shuffling through drawers before stalking back towards me and crouching down. I sucked in a breath as I saw the knife in his hand, his face held a mischievous grin as it glinted in the light. She remembered her scent. It seemed to verify her aura. Her scent was cherry Coke and cigarettes. The latter one was passed onto her, especially after she had handed her her first cigarette only three months ago. Three months was all it took for her to develop that bad habit, but it wasn't the first nor the only one she developed in that period of time. Now she laid on the roof where she had smoked her first cigarette three months ago, and she glanced over at the full can of cherry Coke sitting on the concrete next to her, almost as if it were mocking her. A dull ache formed in her heart, a hollow, resounding ache that penetrated her deepest core. I screeched, my demand ricocheting between the four bedroom walls. The man growled darkly. "If you scream again, I will kill you." I nodded keenly in response to show that I would not challenge his threat. His hand slowly freed my mouth, testing if I would disobey him. He reached into his pocket. A knife, zip tie, and a rag were all revealed. The view made me realize that this could be my last chance to get help. If I did not call out right now, he would take me. I would not make it out alive either way. I let out a bloodcurdling scream loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood.Complete

One attempt had already been made to discover the location of the biggest drugs hideout in Southern England. But after an organised raid on an empty manor house resulted in embarrassment for Oxfordshire Police, the case is turned over to Hawes and Gray to see if they can make any sense of it.
