-The second extract from the casefiles of D.I. Hawes and D.S. Gray-

When D.S. Edmund Gray first arrived on the doorstep of Coates Hill Preparatory School for Boys, I.D. in one hand and takeaway cup of steaming coffee in the other, his initial reaction was how glad he was not to have gone there.
His companion, a certain D.I. Cynthia Hawes, however, was more concerned about how easy it looked to climb out if the large, ornate Gothic style windows on the upper floors and make your way safely (ish) down to the ground below.
And to D.I. Hawes's intent amusement, not that she would ever admit it to another living soul, it seemed one of the young boys had done just that.

"Emma, you're playing with fire" he whispered against my ear and the warm breath tickled my earlobe, sending electricity down my spine. "What if I like fire, huh?" I whispered back. Two could play this game, and although he may have the pants here, you needed two to tango, right? "If that's the case, then carry on. After her dad is killed in a mugging when she was just a teen, she had to take over and raise her five-year-old sister in secret so CPS doesn't take her away, something that she hoped she could keep up until her 21st birthday, when she would file for her baby sister's custody. ⚠️ MATURE⚠️ This story contains strong use of language and mature scenes. If you are offended easily do not read. •.• I snuggled into the comfortable warmth of the fluffy pillow as I was eager to go back to sleep. The fan lullabied me into a hazy state. Suddenly, a heavy weight landed on my waist, pulling me from the tired daze. I leaned up in shock as my hands flung forward defensively to push whoever was on me off. With a strong force, my shoulders were shoved backwards and into the mattress. Grunts of struggle filled the room as we fought each other. The offender grabbed my wrists and held them firmly above my head with one strong hand. Sobs of terror escaped from my chest as a thumb caressed my cheek to wipe away the spilled tears. "P-please let go of me," I begged, trembling. "You are so beautiful." A man's voice spoke, his large hand leaving my face and traveling down my body to squeeze my pelvic region. "Stop." I screeched, my demand ricocheting between the four bedroom walls. The man growled darkly. "If you scream again, I will kill you." I nodded keenly in response to show that I would not challenge his threat. His hand slowly freed my mouth, testing if I would disobey him. He reached into his pocket. A knife, zip tie, and a rag were all revealed. The view made me realize that this could be my last chance to get help. If I did not call out right now, he would take me. I would not make it out alive either way. I let out a bloodcurdling scream loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood.

The first body was left drained of every single drop of blood. It could have been mistaken for a bloodless crime if it weren't for the crimson streaks on the girls' face. Her terrified expression was frozen as her pierced eyes glared into the nothingness. What looked like her real tears blended in with the crimson streaks on her pale cheeks. It looked random until we learned that it must be the M.O. of the killer seeing as his second victim, my sister held those same markings. It had been an odd sight; she had looked peaceful and unharmed except for the bloody tears that couldn't be washed off no matter how hard they tried. My father, the head sheriff of the Southwood's police station, swore that he would bring my sister the justice she deserved, but things escalated fast. A new body was found nearly every month; Girls would go missing and would later be found with unremovable blood streaks on their faces. The blood was always old, and it belonged to other victims he killed. The stained faces of his victims led most parents to hold closed casket funerals. Only after nearly a year since the murders began did the cops learn that most of the bodies of the bloody faced victims had disappeared. It was a secret that they had yet to reveal to the public in fear of the people of Detroit making a mockery out of them. Surely, they had enough experience in their fields to not be outsmarted by one guy!
