Charlie Watney is one of a kind. She's not your typical girl. She's an engineer, an astronaut, and a self-proclaimed nerd. When the offer of going to Mars on the Ares 3, she immediately takes the job- despite her parents protests. She then finds out that her older brother, Mark, is also going to be on the Ares 3.
She soon meets the rest of the crew and forms a close bond with them. 18 sols after they reach Mars, the sandstorm hit. In the attempts to leave, her and Mark are hit with pieces of satellite and are presumed dead. They survive.
With their combined intelligence (and humor) they survive day by day. But will it be enough for them to get back home?
