Velvet has just left her entire life as a royal of the Fuchsia Pod behind to escape an arranged marriage. Now traveling to the Indigo Pod in the West Indian ocean in order to hide out... and fulfill her destiny. As she travels with and Indigo mer named Envidia as her guide, she begins to learn mor about her own hidden magic and the evil she is destined to overcome with eight other mers, one from each pod. However, when Velvet reaches the Indigo Pod and the place where her "training" is to take place, she can't help but feel that something is deeply wrong. The Indigo mermaid that Velvet trains with, Blair, is extremely strange and sets off many alarm bells for Velvet. Not to mention when Velvet becomes friends with another mer named Nelly, she begins to learn of rumors involving Envidia, rumors that make Velvet question the lines between loyalty and blind belief. When Velvet finally does discovers the dark secret that these mers are hiding, will she run? Or will she face danger head on and unlock the dormant magic within her?

Tension between mermaids and humans had always been high, especially after the queen of the mermaids had been killed by humans, regardless that it was an accident. So many years later when Princess Muriel becomes curious about humans, she keeps it to herself. Muriel lives in a castle with her father, sisters, and best friend, Percy. Some of her sisters blame her for their mother's death so Muriel avoids them when at all possible. She gains an interest in humans and trails after their ships. For humans, mermaids are bad luck so she knows that they won't attempt to harm her. The first time Prince Philip steps foot on a fishing boat he witnesses the crew catch a mermaid. Although terrified, he moves forward to help untangle her as no one else is moving. He prays that she'll forgive him. Worry forms when she takes a lock of his hair. Was that a way of marking him? Regardless, he doesn't fight, not wanting to make it worse. Worry increases when she's spotted again. Muriel begins to develop a crush on Prince Philip after he frees her from the net. When her sister's displeasure with her grows worse, Muriel seeks to avoid it. In a desperate attempt to do so she finds herself cave of the sea witch Minerva. Philip's kindness remains prominent in her mind when Minerva offers her a choice to be a human. Hesitantly she agrees, unaware of how different the human world from hers. Philip's bodyguard begins to catch on that Muriel is different and Percy and the king quickly become desperate to find her. My own version of "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. Used to be called, "Mermaid Wish." (Magic in this world works differently than in my series, 'Tèarmann Chronicles')
