Phoenix lived in California for most of her life but tragedy struck and she moved in with her auntie and uncle; they gave her everything and she was thankful but her home was in sun-kissed Sacramento, not Brooklyn, NY. Her mind changes when she meets Grey, she's beautiful in every way but Phoenix isn't supposed to like girls, let alone make a move on one that might not even like her the same way. The seventeen year old is challenged with choosing to overcome her shyness and be her true self or to follow what she was taught and possibly give up on the best thing that ever happened to her. In this society, everyone has a soulmate. And the way to find yours is just look. Along with a soulmate, everyone has a small tattoo on their cheek with a symbol. Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. They live in the same state but for 4 years Harper paniced because she couldn't find her match. She wasn't sure if it was because her sm wasn't of age yet or if her sm lived far away. For 2 years Violet also paniced but she knew that some people don't find their sm for 5-10 years after they come of age, so she wasn't as scared as Harper.
