Esmerelda Midnight is an orphan looked after by the cruel religious order known as the Sestren...kind of like evil nuns. As she is considered the lowest rung in society, her destiny is to 'serve her betters.' She is shy, overweight and clumsy--and the children in her class of 'better rank' are allowed to torment and bully here, as is the teacher, Sestren Agrippa.
Then, one day, she mets an old man, Reynard Fox. Her world is turned upside down. Agrippa grows crazed and even more vicious, seeking to find out WHY she spoke to the old man and what she learned. She would say nothing....then the Black Mariah came for her.....
A dystopian quest story in which an unlikely heroine seeks for Reynard Foc's missing daughter , The Rose of the World, whose untapped powers can save humankind from the Sestren, who are preparing for the 'Great Feast.'...
