I hit my brakes as hard as I could. "Dang it, another tree on the road," I said furiously. I was supposed to be visiting my uncle all the way in Washington. He lived in a small town called Stanton.

It was now raining twice as hard and the lightning was beginning to grow louder. I looked over at my GPS. No signal. Great, I was in the middle of nowhere with fallen trees blocking every path eight hours away from my hometown, Southington.
