I am currently re-writing this story. I ask any new readers to please be patient towards any confusion that may occur or inconsistencies in the story during this process.
"The Royal Ranger: A New Beginning" sheds light on Will Treaty, 18 months after the death of his wife, Alyss. This fan story precedes that book, right after Alyss' death. In "The Mottled Widower," we join Will in mourning his wife, and his quest to avenge her.

Alyss' Return: She Lives
Alyss was said to be dead. At least, that's what a report from the Ranger at Anselm Fief had said. She has gone into hiding as Catherine Altright for the past few weeks in Anselm itself until she earns enough money to travel to Redmont. All seemed well when she met Will again and he ends up falling in love with her secret identity. At first, it seemed like they were going to have a happy relationship. Until someone decided to take Alyss away from Will. Now Will has to save her, Halt has to keep his mouth shut about Catherine being Will's supposedly late wife and Alyss has to postpone the fact that she has to die by the same thing that was supposed to take her. She takes the opportunity to scour her birth galaxy for hints toward a mysterious trait about herself: her ability to create dimensional rifts at will. Along the way, they are joined by Ratchet, Rivet, Clank, Kit, Talwyn and others who guide them around the galaxy, sometimes sharing more than just adventure.~ So, this is a wildly canon-divergent post-RA alternate universe. For the record, I am aware Ratchet and Talwyn are canonically dating (as far as I'm aware), but for the purposes of this AU they broke up some time before Rift Apart.
