Elle Hooper had once been beautiful. Beautiful enough to star on the cover of vogue, Cosmo, and, ironically, Elle. But after one screaming baby boy, and three years of emotional abuse from her footballer ex-husband, Elle has lost what brought her to fame. Now a wizened old woman in the body of a twenty-one year old model, she leaves for North Yorkshire to re-invent both a derelict old house and herself. Daniel had been sick. Scarlet fever, his mother had called the little cold that he had. But that 'little cold' had taken its tool, resulting in him being quaratined in his house until 1798, when his body finally gave up. 218 years later, the house is re-inhabited and Daniel's spirit is freed. But its new resident, a beautiful girl with strangely weary eyes, is the type of person that a dead boy might stay in his prison cell for a few years more for.

"You are safe." She paused for a moment, her gaze fixed to the wall in front of her. "But you're not free." AFTER LILY JONES LOSES EVERYTHING she holds dear, she does everything in her power to forget her pain. She breaks all ties and moves across the country. But when she is forcefully taken to Evergreen, a breathtaking but mysterious mansion where she is ordered to work as a maid for its equally enigmatic inhabitants, she is robbed of the only thing she had left: her freedom. There, she encounters two groups of people. Those who, like herself, have been ripped of their independence and forced into servitude, and their young, rich and austere captors, the Evergreen people. As she gets familiar with life in her peculiar prison, memories that she kept buried try to resurface and she starts to suspect that the secrets kept within the walls of Evergreen might be more unnatural and dangerous than she could ever imagine. Will she be able to save herself and her new family from the storm that threatens to break on Evergreen or will her repressed guilt and fears cause her to lose the people she cares about once again?
