My lungs filled with air again. 

My chest heaved, extracting more and more delicious oxygen. 

I coughed continuously until eventually water flooded out my mouth. It made my throat burn angrily. I flopped back onto my side and tried to focus on slowing my racing heart beat. 'I'm alive' I thought. I clawed at the ground, just to check i was right and this wasn't a dream. Dirt collected underneath my nails and the crunch of leaves and twigs reassured me I was on the ground and not submerged in frozen water. 

Gentle fingers ran through my hair, and I couldn't fight the smile that pulled the edges of my lips.
