The Hosts all harbor some kind of love for Haruhi. They want to know who deserves to be with Haruhi more. So they ask Nekozawa to help them, he does but with a challenge. Whoever is able to rescue her from her tower is the one with the most strongest and purest love. Then the Hosts have agreed that whoever wins gets to pursue her. If she doesn't feel the same then its up to Haruhi who she wants to date.
