When Maya Hart loses her little sister, Kaitlyn, to cancer, she's sure she'll never recover. Between her parents' divorce and the battle she fights with depression, she feels nothing inside but a deep, dark emptiness. When Katy suggests they spend a few months in Texas with her Aunt Sadie, Maya isn't sure a different view will change anything, but she decides to give it a try.
In Texas, Maya discovers a refuge in Aunt Sadie's ranch house. Once they've settled in, Katy hands her a notebook full of drawings and letters made for her- from Kaitlyn. As Maya looks at one each day, she realizes how much Kaitlyn loved her, and each entry tells her to continue to enjoy life. To move on.
If only it were that easy.
But then a ranger named Lucas comes crashing into her life, and Maya is blindsided. He makes her feel again. As she lets him in, she is surprised by how much she cares about him, and that's where things get complicated. How can she fall in love and be happy and live life when Kaitlyn will never get the chance to do the same things?
With Kaitlyn's dying words as guidance, Maya knows she'll have to learn to listen and trust again. But will she have to leave her past behind to find happiness in her future?
(Maya is 17, and Kaitlyn is 13.)
