Elise Moon lives in her poor village of Hënmèi with only her scornful stepmother as family. Sick and tired of her stepmother, Hàn Līn Moon, frowning and finding faults in Elise every day, Elise is desperate to leave. Run away, even. She hates the way her stepmother curses her for their poverty, blames her for their lack of money and expects her to bring wealth.
But when she finds a photo of her with another woman-smiling, waving, identical to her-she begins to wonder...
